Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) with a very small diameter result in high current density in the NW when electrons flow through the metal-semiconductor NW-metal (M-S-M) nanostructure.Therefore,one of the current-driven phenomena is Joule heat dissipation,leading to obvious self-heating in the MS-M nanostructure.In situ Joule heating experiments have shown that the temperature reached at the point contact of the thin Pt NWs is higher than the melting point of Pt,and welding of the two ultrathin Pt NWs was achieved.[1,2] Since the welding of metallic NWs,[2] semiconductor NWs,[3] carbon nanotubes (CNTs),[4-7] polymer nanofibres,[8] and nanoparticles[9] is fundamental for the construction of a three-dimensional nanostructure and may have an important application in the fabrication of nanoelectronics based on the NWs,many techniques for welding nanomaterials have been developed,including nanoscale soldering,cold welding,electron beam heating and Joule heat welding.[10-13] The nanoscale soldering and cold welding require the heater and indenter respectively.
