毛姆是20世纪英国文学界最为流行的作家之一,在世界读者群中有着深远的影响。他曾于20世纪20年代到中国的上海、汉口、四川等地旅游,并根据旅行见闻,创作出了旅行散文《在中国的屏风上》、长篇小说《彩色的面纱》以及中篇小说《信》等一系列以中国或南洋地区为背景极富异域情调的文学作品。本文将采取文本细读的方法,将新加坡殖民地中的华人与英国殖民者进行对照,以此展现殖民地中被极具优越感的白人所审视、批判的华人他者形象,揭示出20世纪西方白人社会对于华人的审视与偏见。
