Guided by Chairman Mao’s revolutionary line, cadres, poor and middle peasants and scientific and technological personnel in our region actively carried out mass scientific experiments and succeeded in experimenting with winter beets in 1971 with the help of the Chinese Academy of Agriculture, Forestry and Science and the Beet Research Institute of Heilongjiang Province. The area planted in 1974 expanded to 163 mu, yielding 3,500-5,000 kg of tuberous root per mu and sugar content of 14-16%.
