Although there are many 3000kW (4000hp) and some 3730kW (5000hp) diesel locomotives on the U.S.A., the main locomotive is still a 2,237kW (3000hp) six-axle diesel locomotive and there are currently about 10,000 such locomotives used on trunk railways. The average service time of these 2237kW locomotives has reached 20 to 25 years. In an effort to replace these less powerful locomotives, the two major diesel locomotive manufacturers, GE and GM, have been focusing their efforts on the development of 4474kW (6000hp) high-power diesel locomotives in recent years.
