Kingston’s novel The Chinaman details the hard work of early Chinese laborers in building railways in the Sierra Nevada. They worked hard for their families, but were increasingly estranged from their family members; they were excluded from the history of the United States as the main participants in the Pacific Railroad. The tragic experience of early Chinese laborers in the United States is not a shame to their descendants, but their pride. A correct understanding of the great contributions made by the early Chinese laborers to the U.S. construction will give their future generations a strong sense of identity and play an active role in the process of establishing the identity of Chinese offspring.
