In 1988, when American author PAUL THEROUX published a best-seller RIDING THEIRON ROSTER: BY TRAIN THROOGH CHINA, I was invited by THE NEW LEADER Magazine Writing a book review, he pointed out that this prolific writer who makes good use of fiction techniques to write travel facts and stories seems to have made a bad impression on the characters seen on any journey. In his pen, the Chinese are unruly, talkative, numb, polite: “Everyone coughs clear throat, everyone spits, sometimes drooling mouth, and sometimes ballistic spit to the side of the spittoon They ... ... they walk on foot, as if skating, arms flapping ... ... They talk loudly, nagging endless ... ... They are littering on the ground, they made the toilet hellish dirty ... ”
