内地的同人和海外的朋友经常发问:深圳的话剧发展得起来吗?回答应该是肯定的。深圳是个移民城市,带来了京、沪、穗等内地大城市的文化习惯;深圳又是个年青的城市,人口平均年龄不到30岁;深圳还是个国民教育层次较高的城市,高学历者占城市人口的比例在全国处于领先地位。这一切正是话剧得以发展的基本条件。在我看来,当代话剧是都市文明的重要组成部分,它的观众群体主要就是都市青年、白领阶层与知识分子,深圳拥有着为数可观的潜在的话剧观众。当然,这只是话剧运作的客体因素,话剧运作还要有主体因素,也就是从事话剧艺术创作的人。
