Cleveland’s autobiographical work “The Soul on Ice” (1968) is considered to be another masterpiece that exposes African Americans to discrimination after Wright’s “native son.” Its main content is to explore American racial relations, prison life, the works of some black writers and their thoughts. In a essay “The Review of the Native Son,” Cliveff angrily denounced the ethnocentrism of another black writer, James Baldwin. This article analyzes Clifford’s allegation against Baldwin, who finds the allegation inappropriate, based on Clifford’s narrow ideology and his misunderstanding of Baldwin.
