《格萨尔》源远流长,表现了藏民族的民族精神,概括了藏民族在各个历史时期的社会现象。结合藏民族独特的文化以及历史背景,就像藏文典籍中的传记文学(■)一样,史诗也应该有自己的“素材”(■)。即,《格萨尔》史诗最早起缘于《玛桑仲》;继承了“喇”(■)和“央”(■)的观念等藏民族的原始崇拜;沿用了“格萨尔军王”这一人名,而且在尚武重兵上完全相似;《格萨尔》史诗艺术地再现了吐蕃政权时期的历次战争。
