The Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah is located directly beside the historic Telfair Square, opposite Tierfer College of the Arts, the oldest public art museum in the South and home to the architect William Jay was designed and built in 1818-1819. Located at the heart of the historic Savannah city center, this ancient city was planned by James Oglethorpe in 1733 when the grid of streets was divided by a series of tree-covered city squares as landmarks. The Telfair Museum of Art is a contemporary building, but in harmony with Savannah’s ancient urban fabric reflects respect for historic blocks and traditional road grids. The height and volume of the art gallery also echo the surrounding buildings. Glass facade on the side of York Avenue and Telfair surrounded by trees
