According to a report by New Scientist, the U.S. Congress is currently fiercely debating a plan to set up a super-science department. Advocates claim that this will improve efficiency, while critics fear that it is difficult to operate flexibly and will excessively focus its authority on one agency. Robert Walker, chairman of the U.S. House Science Council, held a hearing on the plan. The plan calls for the establishment of a cabinet-level unit to bring together the scientific institutions of NASA, NSF, EPO, energy, commerce and agriculture.
