Rabdosia plants are used in Japan for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, while in China they are used as anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory agents. There have been several reviews of the chemical and biological activities of the diterpenoids of the genus Cassia. Published. This paper reports on the isolation and structure of a new diterpene- 4-epi-henryine A_1 from Rabdosia henryj (Hemsl.) Hara. The structure is determined from the spectral data and is the 4-epimer of henryine A in western Hubei. The western Hubei Xiangcai was collected from Luxi County, Hubei Province in October 1986. The aerial part was refluxed with 95% ethanol. The concentrated ethanol extract was ground in ethyl acetate and the ethyl acetate layer was shaken with 5% sodium carbonate.
