The fruiting bodies of Russula subnigricans (1.18 kg) were collected and extracted twice with methanol (51) for two days at room temperature. The extract was concentrated in vacuo to give an aqueous suspension which was then partitioned between ethyl acetate and n-butanol. The ethyl acetate soluble fraction was evaporated onto a silica gel column and the active fraction eluted with chloroform-ethyl acetate (9:1 and 8:2) was rechromatographed on a silica gel column eluting with a chloroform-ethyl acetate mixture. Subsequent recrystallization from chloroform-methanol gave Russuphelin A. Upon analysis of the spectral data and confirmation by total synthesis, the structure was determined to be 2,6-bis(2,6-dichloro-4-hydroxyphenoxy)-1, 4-dimethoxybenzene. In vitro cytotoxicity assay, Russu-
