现在,加工淬火到硬度达Rc50~58的机车牵引传动用的主、从动齿轮的齿是在齿轮磨床上进行的。这一加工工序需要很长时间和谨慎操作,因为出现的表面缺陷——烧伤会导致齿轮在使用中产生裂纹和齿的急剧磨损。而且在现有的设备上不解体轮对便不能修复从动齿轮齿的渐开线齿形。苏联中央机械制造科学研究院详细地研究了牵引齿轮淬火齿的刀片加工方法,这种新方法代替磨削制造齿轮,同时能在不解体轮对的条件下修复渐开线齿形。目前交通部所属工已厂采用了这种方法。
