西岛,全称西茂洲岛,地处美丽的海南省三亚市东南约十海里处,与三亚、天涯海角呈三角位置,总面积1.75平方公里,与东茂洲岛相距约5海里。上世纪60至80年代,东、西茂洲两岛极负盛名,被称为“南海前哨的两只眼睛”。当年,西沙、南沙群岛为南越傀儡占据,而美第七舰队舰船则常在这一海区游弋,因而“东西岛”以其独特的战略位置成为不折不扣的“反帝前哨”。一位名叫朱才周的守岛老战士,1959年12月上岛,直到1982年调任离岛,将23年青春无私奉献在守岛事业上,由于西岛的特殊背景,朱守岛期间,曾有周恩来、朱德、刘少奇、徐向前、林彪、聂荣臻、叶剑英、江青、许世友、贺子珍等数十位重量级人物上岛视察、慰问,同时,岛上长住渔民中,赫赫有名的“娘子军连”、“八姐妹炮班”也留下了诸多脍炙人口的传奇。当今日的西茂洲岛以另一种英姿拥抱着各地游客,为祖国贡献着特色光彩之际,听听这位年过古稀的当年守岛人讲述有关西岛的一系列往事,当是别有一番滋味在心头。
