What is the economic performance of the two big powers? The two countries are making progress in catching up with the world’s leading economies and China is dominant. Although the two countries have different political systems, they all adopt similar economic concepts. Both countries have implemented the socialist economic system. By the 1970s, both economies embarked on a journey from state control to the market and from the ideal of self-sufficiency to the international economic integration. Both countries have started to catch up with some of the world’s leading economies. But China has been doing much better than India. In the mid-1970s, the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of these two great powers was about the same as that of the United States, which was roughly 1/20 of that of the United States. But last year, China’s per capita real income had reached 15% of the U.S. level, while India was roughly half that of China. Between 1980 and 2003, China’s per capita real income rose by 300% during the same period, while India rose by 125% at the common international prices.
