Yugoslav News Agency reported that from 9 to 13 April 1984, representatives of 18 Mediterranean countries and the European Community held a conference on the protection of the Mediterranean environment in the Greek capital, Athens. The meeting pointed out that in recent years, the Mediterranean Sea has been severely polluted. According to UN statistics, there are 60,000 tons of detergents entering the Mediterranean each year, 2,800 tons of zinc, 130 tons of mercury and 120,000 tons of oil. In addition, 13 billion tons of sewage are discharged into the Mediterranean each year. The pollution of the Mediterranean caused over-breeding of jellyfish, affecting the development of marine tourism and marine fisheries in the Mediterranean countries. The conference decided to eliminate these over-breeding jellyfish. To this end, the Mediterranean countries spent $ 100,000 on 1984 and $ 75,000 in 1985.
