Researchers at the National Engineering Laboratory, Idaho, USA, are developing a new coating technology. They use De Laval nozzles to produce solid bodies and coatings near the final dimensions of a wide range of metals, polymers and composites. They have produced low-carbon steel strips and polymer films as thin as 5 μm thick and have achieved encouraging results in the use of spray-forming methods for making molds and related tools for rapid prototyping. Spray-formed products have many advantages both technically and economically. Metal grain jet collected in the mold or matrix and quickly solidified, you can get uniform, tiny grain microstructure, it has excellent physical and mechanical properties. The economical advantage of this method of processing is that the product being sprayed is approaching its final size, requiring only slight machining, forging or hot rolling.
