Producing enough healthy food without environmental pollution is a serious challenge to future world agriculture. The Swedish “Food for the 21st Century” research project has studied the economic, environmental and social aspects of a sustainable farming system. This article lists the Swedish “Food 21” research program and other relevant international studies The plan focuses on some studies to improve nutrient use efficiency, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. It shows that there are many ways to sustainably manage nutrient use efficiency, some are complex but some are simple. Government policies include allowances, research and technology, and public recognition of farming practices, all of which are combined with the development of these solutions. There is a need for a participatory approach to knowledge transfer so that scientists, policy makers, farmers, consultants, and consumers can exchange information and work together to build a sustainable farming system.
