Japan’s Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. will use a new process to mass produce a carbon fiber, which costs less than half the cost of existing carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is a new material that is lighter than aluminum and stronger than steel. This pitch-based carbon fiber was developed by the Kyushu government industrial research institute. Based on the process, Mitsubishi Chemical will build a plant with an annual output of 1,000 tons next year and hopes to utilize the high strength and toughness of the material to meet the needs of the automotive and aircraft industries. It is said that some steel, chemical and fiber factories are planning to introduce the process.
