Zhongshan is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese. Overseas Chinese, compatriots from Hong Kong, Maucao and Taiwan that live in 87 countries and regions on five continents of the world are more than 800,000 and are known as the hometown of overseas Chinese and the hometown of folk art in Guangdong Province (Cantonese opera). On November 12, 1866, Sun Yat-sen, the pioneer of the Chinese nation, was born in Zhongshan, Cuiheng Village, Nanlang Town, Zhongshan City, anciently known as Fragrant Hills. It is located in the lower reaches of the west and north reaches of the central part of the Pearl River Delta to the sea and to the north of Panyu District, Guangzhou City. Foshan Shunde District, west of Jiangmen City, Xinhui District, Doumen District of Zhuhai City, Zhuhai City of Southeast China, and Lingdingyang Bay of the Pearl River Estuary across the East, and Shenzhen and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Xiangshan County was established in 1152 and on April 15, 1925, to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s re-designation as Zhongshan County and later Zhongshan City, it was the only prefecture-level city in China named after the great man.
