美国国会图书馆是全美国最大的图书馆,其中中文部收藏中国古籍历史悠久,最早的汉籍来自清代同治年间(1862—1874年)由清政府赠送。该馆收藏的汉籍,以地方志最为著名。本世纪四十年代朱士嘉先生以他在国会图书馆工作之便,编纂成《美国国会图书馆藏中国方志目录》一稿,著录中国方志2,939种。其后陆续补进,至八十年代末,该馆藏中国方志达4,000余种。这个数量已占七十年代我国普查方志后编成
