蔡元培(1868-1940),浙江绍兴人,我国著名教育家。1916年12月-1927年间任北京大学校长,积极支持酝酿中的新文化运动,提倡学术民主,主张兼容并包,使北大成为“五四”新文化运动、爱国学生运动与传播马克思主义的策源地。实行民主办学,网罗人才,改革学制、修定课程,融合中外文化,包容各种学派,提倡美育与德育,使北大面目焕然一新。
Cai Yuanpei (1868-1940), Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, a famous educator in China. From December 1916 to December 1919, he was the president of Peking University. He actively supported the new cultural movement brewing and advocated academic democracy. He advocated compatibility and integration so that Peking University became the source of the May 4th New Culture Movement, the patriotic student movement and the dissemination of Marxism. Implementing democratic schools, recruiting talented people, reforming the educational system, revising the curriculum, integrating Chinese and foreign cultures, including various schools of thought, and advocating aesthetic education and moral education will make Peking University look fresh and new.
