《柳如是别传》是陈寅恪是大部头的一部专著，也是历史考证学派的压轴之作。柳如是深明民族大义、坚守民族气节，但又热衷功名、攀附权贵，其生活和性格是复杂的。本书在诗学上的价值，恐怕远在要学之上。在考据方面，本书又可为后学发蒙起例；但陈氏也未能幸免失于繁琐，这似乎与他“无可为而为之”的心境有关。本文试图通过《柳如是别传》来认识陈寅恪，并进而认识考证学派，是作者二十世纪学术史系列论文之一。
“Willow is Legend” is Chen Yinque is a monograph, but also the finale of history textbook. Liu Rushi is well aware of the righteousness of the nation, sticks to the national integrity, but fond of fame, cling to power, his life and character are complex. The poetic value of this book, I am afraid that far in the study. In the textual criticism, this book can give birth to examples for later studies; but Chen also failed to escape the cumbersome, which seems to be related to his “impossible” mentality. This article tries to understand Chen Yinke through “Liu Rushi”, and then to understand the textual research school, which is one of the author’s series of academic history in the 20th century.
