Looking for evidence that the nervous system and the immune system are linked at the molecular level is one of the hot topics in biology today.Garney et al at the University of Chicago recently used high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) A new growth factor of 56,000 daltons (56 kD) was isolated and purified from 200 salivary glands of male BALB / C mice and cloned and expressed successfully in monkey COS cells. Maintaining the growth of cultured chicken spinal neurons is a neurotrophic factor interestingly that this protein is at the same time a phytohemagglutinin-stimulating product of lymphokines produced by T lymphocytes with the ability to induce B-cell lymphoblasticization and Differentiate it into antibody-secreting cells and stimulate the secretion of antibodies from mature B lymphocytes.
