Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly Company announced recently that they have developed a new drug that may be used to kill the hepatitis C virus. The treatment principle of this medicine is the same as that of some AIDS drugs to kill HIV. The two drug companies hope the new drug will begin clinical trials in 2003. They claim that the compound blocks one of the proteases necessary for hepatitis C virus replication. Given that HIV protease inhibitors have a significant effect on the treatment of AIDS, many companies are already trying to develop inhibitors of hepatitis C protease.
