This article stems from the author’s disappointment with the quality of foreign-language translations of oral literature in Africa, especially verbal poetry. This situation means excluding a member of the global cultural exchange of African oral poetry and representatives of cultural diversity. After a brief examination of contemporary African literary landscapes and a critical analysis of English translations of oral poems in Africa, the authors conclude that these translations are far from embodying the cultural meanings of the original texts. The author draws on the experience of Africa in this field and proposes a radical and epistemological suggestion that oral poetry in Africa should be presented verbally in the target language and culture. The possibility and prerequisite for this reorientation is to develop bilingual and bicultural Europeans and Asians in Africa and in global universities.
