胡林翼(1812—1861),字贶生,号润之,湘军重要首领,汉族,湖南益阳县泉交河人。道光十六年进士。授编修,先后充会试同考官、江南乡试副考官。历任安顺、镇远、黎平知府及贵东道,咸丰四年迁四川按察使,次年调湖北按察使,升湖北布政使、署巡抚。在武昌咯血死。有《胡文忠公遗书》等。与曾国藩、左宗棠、彭玉麟被史学家并称为“中兴四名臣”。
