金昌经济技术开发区和金昌高新技术产业开发区是经省政府批准成立的两个省级开发区。开发区创建以来,坚持以开放促开发,以开发促发展,逐步走出了一条符合省情、市情并具有地方特色的开放发展之路,成为全市对外开放的窗口,深化改革的实验田,高新技术产业的示范园及新的经济增长点。1997年7月,被国务院特区办、中国开发区协会批准成为会员单位,是西北五省区中唯一人选的省级开发区。截止1998年底,开发区已形成固定资产约6.8亿元,形成生产能力11亿元,累计完成工业总产值41.1亿元,上交税金1.69亿元,为企业减免税金1.46亿元,安排就业1.85万人。累计审批项目256项,建成企业187家,形成了一定规模和实力,为二次创业奠定了基础。在开发区,建成了一批在国内和西北地区具有竞争实力的高新技术企业和骨干企业,初步形成了一个以有色冶金、化工、机电、建材、医药轻工等为主的工业群体。目前,高新区已经省科委认定的高新技术企业11家,总投资2.7亿
