In 1919, the International Research Council was set up by astronomers, geophysicists and chemists. In 1931, the International Research Council was reorganized into the International Joint Commission on Science (ICSU) for its broad international representation. This is an international organization composed of 17 science unions, covering almost every area of scientific research currently dedicated to human beings. The IUGG is one of 17 science federations of the International Joint Commission on Science (ICU), co-founded by the International Research Council in 1919 and IUGG dedicated to earth science research
