Defoe’s vilification of the Chinese people in The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe is a manifestation of racist discourse. However, influenced by the tide of criticism of the national character, the book attracted much attention in the late Qing Dynasty and appeared in three successive versions. The three translators translated the Chinese images in the original texts to inspire their compatriots and save the nation. Their transformative racist discourse, the construction of national discourse and the criticism of their national character have far-reaching implications. However, the translators expressed personal opinions based on the authority of colonial culture and failed to reflect the theoretical hypotheses proving their legitimacy in the cultural hegemony of colonialism. They also played an important role in shaping the unequal relationship between Chinese and Western cultures.
