金沙江全长2,918公里,約为长江全长的二分之一,流域面积約有50万平方公里。金沙江流量丰沛而稳定,河床比降大,蘊藏着极为丰富的水力資源,据有关部門不完全的統計,单是幹流蘊藏的动能就达8000万瓩以上。中上游有茂密的原始森林,流域內的地下資源也十分丰富,尤其是中下游沿江两岸,地貭勘探証明已經有許多重要的鉄、銅、鎳、煤等矿藏。因此开发和綜合利用金沙江的水利資源便日趋重要。为了配合长江流域規則工作的进行,在1958年8—12月间中国科学院地理研究所与长江流域规則办公室协同組織了金沙江調查队,对金沙江中下游巨甸至宜賓段沿干流河谷进行了踏勘。这一次調查,由于
