The article mainly examines the social and economic conditions of the elderly families living alone in Japan today. Data sources include national surveys as well as local surveys. Using the statistical analysis method, the following main conclusions are drawn: The family model is changing from the mainstay family to the couple-type family relationship. The following two trends can be observed: (1) The number of elderly living alone is increasing. (2) Significant reduction of three generations of same-generation families. The increase in the number of elderly people living alone is reflected in large cities and in sparsely populated areas. Quite single elderly families face poverty, loneliness and lack of social ties. They seek a variety of services to meet physical, emotional, economic, shopping and other needs. As a result, central and local governments, non-profit organizations and communities are committed to providing shopping support facilities, housekeeping services, home visits and care.
