汉代绘画集各种功能于一身,成为现实世界、精神世界和理想世界的物质载体,具有实用性和审美性的双重特点,形成了以“动”为核心的审美特征。汉代绘画的“动”与它所蕴含的生活真实与生命真实紧密相关,包括艺术形式的灵动与生命精神的生动两层含义:线条的使用创造了形式的灵动,颜色的使用铸就了生活和生命世界的生动,由此形成了汉代绘画形象与意蕴之间体用合一、灵肉不二的审美特征。随着时代精神的变化,后世绘画在汉代绘画这一特征的基础上不断改进、突破和发展,形象和意蕴的分离过程开始出现,并不断推动中国绘画史的发展。
