李唐在中国画史上形成的地位,首先在于他改变了山水画发展以来的构图以及笔墨运用方式,使传统山水从全景式构图到半边构图,再到截景式构图,开启了其后马远、夏珪一角、半边局部取景布局的全新山水画章法,并且随着构图、布局、笔墨等的变化而导致绘画观念发生了变化。其次是李唐的个人行为及绘画表现出的“忠君爱国”气节,迎合了时人的心理及高宗在建炎初年的需要。
