Japan, experiencing a devastating blow to World War II, has become one of the most powerful industrialized countries in the past 30 years. From 1966 to 1970, the GNP grew at an average annual rate of 12.3%, the highest growth rate in all industrialized countries during the same period. From 1973 to 1978, Japan’s GNP almost doubled to become the second most prosperous country in the free world. The rapid growth of Japan’s GNP is largely attributable to the increase in productivity. According to the Japanese estimates, Japan’s labor productivity increased by an average of 8.2% per annum in the two decades between 1960 and 1979, a factor of two and a-half times higher than that of the United States. To find out why Japan’s labor productivity will be so extraordinary
