据说,纽约大都会博物馆的收藏宗旨是,只收录已故的、在艺术史上占有一席之地的艺术家的作品。换句话说,是力图确保每件藏品都是已经被广泛承认的艺术珍宝。因此,如果一个艺术家在有生之年看到自己的作品能被大都会博物馆收藏,那无疑是看到自己在世界艺术史上的地位被公开肯定,是会欣喜若狂的。也正因为这个收藏宗旨,大都会博物馆一直以来以沉稳的传统艺术为主,从埃及、希腊到中国、中东,常年的展品大多像出土文物一样,在幽暗的光线中富丽堂皇地娓娓讲述世界文明史。
