One way to look for a schistosome vaccine is to identify the key molecules involved in its immune evasion mechanism. A2 phospholipase (PLA2) is an important enzyme involved in lipid metabolism. Recent studies have shown that PLA2 is involved in membrane lipid stabilization in membrane-bound form and is particularly active in high cytotoxic phospholipid hydroperoxides produced against superoxide released by activated leukocytes. In view of the important role of this enzyme in counteracting the fatal lipid peroxidation and its similarity to our recently identified characteristics of the integrated membrane protein of Schistosoma japonicum, this paper aims to determine whether schistosome adults possess membrane bound PLA2.
