新文化运动时期，体育史学获得了新的地位和价值。十年动乱，体育史研究搁浅。改革开放的１５年，中国体育史学获得了大的发展：建立了文史工作委员会，召开了体育文史工作会议，成立了《体育文史》杂志社，收集了古今中外大量体育史料，出版了许多有价值的体育史书，目前正着手建立信息网络系统，体育史研究已形成规模。体育史学首先应为现实服务，提出与体育发展战略有关联的见解和建议；体育史学研究应注意发掘与开发，编写各种体育史读物，并对东方传统体育加以研究。可以说，世界体育的发展状况决定了当代体育史学的发展方向。
During the period of New Culture Movement, sports history gained new status and value. Ten years of turmoil, sports history research ran aground. In the 15 years of reform and opening up, China’s sports history gained significant development: the establishment of the Commission for Literary and Historical Work, the convening of a conference on sports literature and history, the establishment of a magazine for sports literature and history, the collection of numerous historical and sports materials at all times and in all countries, and the publication of many valuable History of sports books, is now working to establish an information network system, sports history has formed a scale. Sports history should first serve the reality and put forward the opinions and suggestions related to the sports development strategy. The study of sports history should pay attention to discovering and developing various sports history books and studying the traditional sports in the east. It can be said that the development of world sports determines the development of contemporary sports history.
