The so-called “bad shape” defect that occurs when a sheet or strip is flattened in an arbitrary plane is a very common problem in the production of nonferrous and ferrous metal strips and in the production of non-metallic strip material. This is mainly due to uneven rolling of the strip along its width. Advanced thickness control and maintenance of equal thickness techniques help to reduce this source, however, there are still large numbers of cold-rolled strips that pass the cross-sectional shape check as unacceptable. It is often the case that such defects are difficult to eliminate due to the lack of a suitable method of measuring the cross-sectional shape.
