1994年8月我亲眼目睹了国内少有、世界上罕见的硅化木化石群,它分布在新疆奇台的长拉麦里山自然保护区,在六棵树至五彩城之间,两地相距150余公里,面积约300公顷,主要集中地有10处,每处数量不同,少则几棵,多则几百棵,大多已露出地面。具有完整的树杆形状的就有1000余棵,平躺在地面,有的独占一方,有的相互交叉,横七竖八,其中最长的一棵达26米,有一露出地面的根长达6米,整个场面看上去似一片采伐地,树桩高矮不一,一般有1.5～2米,根部以上30～40厘米处的直径最大的有1.75米,2～3人手拉手才能合围一周,有的还可看到清晰的年轮。还有一株横跨在20米左右的沟上,宛如天然石桥。 这里的硅化木在世界上同类景观中属最大的景观之一,可以毫不夸张地称它为化石森林。
