在生理学、病理生理学、药理学、公共卫生学和生物学实验室中,经常要用记纹器或其他相类似的仪器来连续描记各种曲线,以将各种活动记录下来。历来的描记方法通常大多应用熏烟法,熏烟法有其缺点,如熏上烟以后的记录纸易被碰上不必要的痕迹,并且在固定以后,上面即不能再写字。而且手续较繁也不经济,所以近年来应用墨水描记法逐渐通行,并有各种墨水描记笔尖被设计出来。有的墨水描记笔尖是金属的,有的是轻金属的,有的是硬纸片,有的是赛璐珞的(薛士良),有的是玻璃毛细管(孙瑞元).
