中唐社会的上层风尚因之日趋奢华、安闲和享乐,浅斟低唱、车马宴游日益取代了兵车弓刀的边塞生涯,连衣服时尚也来了个变化,宽袖长袍代替了天宝时的窄袖紧身。中唐而后,花鸟画画家个性真正成熟地表露出来,不再拘泥于传统,不再是大同小异,转而追求风格繁多,个性突出。边鸾的画作通过营造真实的画面效果达到求真的境界,但真实之外又经可以裁减,法度取舍,最终形成真实唯美,可见可入而不可求的画面效果,这种方法在今后将不断地影响中国绘画和中国绘画的精神。
