党中央、国务院提出的实施西部大开发战略，是以江泽民总书记为核心的党中央，对邓小平同志的“两个大局”思想的落实。是一项长期艰巨的工程。西部大开发与地理学科有着密切的联系。地理教学要为西部大开发服务，把西部大开发作为地理教学的重要内容，贯穿于地理教学的全过程。
