现为中铁文工团的女高音歌唱家薛沁英出生在山西省沁源县,她在家乡地方戏曲和浩如烟海民歌的薰陶下,自幼酷爱声乐艺术,一心梦想当一名歌唱演员。 1969年她应征入伍,当了三年文艺兵,三年后,她成了中国铁路文工团歌舞团的一名独唱演员,从此,踏上了艺术生活的新天地！ 说来也怪,薛沁英从小就羡慕两种生活:一是威武雄壮、严肃活泼的军旅生活;一是那轰轰隆隆气势非凡的火车头南来北往的铁路生活。现在,她如愿以偿了。她会心地笑了！她想:要想做一名在舞台上立得住,受观念欢迎的歌唱演员,就得有过硬的本领、高超的技术,就得有扎实的声乐艺术的基本功。于是她在组织的关怀支持下,求教于上海音乐学院、中国音乐学院的著名女高音歌唱家、声乐教育家王品素、张权教授。她如饥似渴地刻苦钻研,认真揣摩,深刻
