At the beginning of Tang Dynasty (618-907), there was a statesman named Li Ji. He was very loyal to the court and fully committed himself to serving the government. The emperor thought him to be a reliable person that could take great responsibilities.
One day, Li Ji was struck with a severe disease. After making a thorough diagnosis, the physician listed the medical herbs that could cure his disease, but he said that the cure needs man’s beards as the guiding drug to fully bring about the healing effect. Upon hearing that, the emperor immediately cut of his own beards and gave them to the physician as the guiding drug, telling him to cure Li Ji’s disease as soon as possible.
Li Ji was cured soon. When he heard that the emperor cut off his own beards for his guiding drug, he came to the palace to thank the emperor. He kept kowtowing in front of the emperor till his head bled. The emperor stopped him and said: “It is nothing worth so much gratitude. I just did what is good for my country.”
