Peptide mapping and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques were used to compare the coat proteins of the virus biologically-defined isolates in seven cucumber flowers. All seven isolates were grouped into two subgroups and confirmed previous reports of the existence of these groups. Isolates B, C-1, C-2 and F belong to one subpopulation while isolates L-2, L-3 and WL belong to another subpopulation. Isolates within the same subpopulation were identical in coat protein. One-dimensional peptide mapping technology appears to be a reliable, sensitive technology that can complement existing virus classification techniques.
