Saturated alkanols of 8 to 12 carbon chain lengths have the effect of anti-liposomes (eg, herpes simplex virus, HSV) and lose this effect when the chain length exceeds 18 carbons. More recently, however, it has been found that saturated alkanols of more than 18 carbons, such as n-docosanol (ShanXiao alcohol), when properly formulated to allow direct contact with target cells, can inhibit HSV infection. The specificity of n-docosanol to the liposomal virus may serve as a broad-spectrum antiviral agent that is inactive against non-lipoprotein viruses. HSV-1 was inoculated on the hairless back of guinea pigs and were coated with n-docetaxel cream or control vehicle, respectively, to measure the number of small blisters. On the 56th h post-inoculation (peak), there were an average of 129 small blisters on untreated sites and 51% on small blisters treated with n-docosanol cream, whereas the vehicle control site had no Inhibit the role of small blisters.
