在剥皮寮身上,可见当下不少保育运动虽然呼应了民间群众的声音和所需,然而在决定保育的方向和方式上,往往都由当局或者专业人士主导。这种由上而下的方式,往往就是令旧区或老街在保育之后“灵魂出窍”的主因。摄影师黄适上的家族在艋舺有逾百年的历史渊源,在他眼中,保育往往由精英文化主导,而忽视了庶民文化的精神,褫夺了原区本身的生活气息和活力,令它徒变成僵化的历史布景。致力于用纪实摄影去留住万华区生活面貌的他,不但联同多位同道者在区内举行展览,连跻身在华西街模乳巷内的平民旅馆古山园旅社,其主事者亦有志借着各种活动唤起区内人对于万华的情感与思考。这种由下而上的保育运动,最重要的精神乃是融入当地的原居民生活当中,没有远离群众。
