渭水流域在史前阶段是一个传说时代人物众多、文化丰富的重要区域。而地处渭水上游的天水地区,从华胥氏到伏羲氏、女娲氏、炎帝神农氏,再到黄帝,其故里多在这里。以大地湾、师赵村和西山坪等遗址为代表的前仰韶时代文化遗存在以及众多的仰韶文化遗址,以其完整的考古编年和系统的文化序列,真实反映了天水地区由母系氏族社会到父系氏族社会的悠久历史,说明天水地区是华夏乃至中华民族文化的重要源头之一。
